Bible week brings scripture to the young

By C.J. Varghese, Kurnool

A priest in a southern Indian diocese has launched a “Bible Week” to instill a love of Christian scripture in young people.

The Catholic Church has not introduced the Bible to its people properly, says Father K. Prathap Reddy of Kurnool diocese in Andhra Pradesh state.

Catholics are taught catechism, prayers and rosary only, he told ucanews.com.

The priest said he thought of conducting a program for children to ensure they were familiar with the Bible.

The first Bible Week that ended Nov. 19 comprised songs, dances, skits, quiz and games, all related to the Bible.

B. Manisha, a ninth-grader who was among some 300 participants, said the program thrilled her as she has found new strength and joy. “Most of us participated in the fancy dress of Bible personalities, drawing Bible scenes or memorizing Bible verses,” she said.

Anvesh Vanamala said his illiterate parents never read the Bible. “The Bible week has created a desire to know more about God and Jesus,” he added.

Lavanya Gokula said she would read the Bible to groups of illiterate people and explain its passages. Her friend Bhaskar Narra said he never considered the Bible as important. “Now I want to keep the Bible always with me,” he said.

Father Reddy said the program’s success has encouraged him to conduct similar programs in the future. He said the participants promised to keep a copy of the New Testament in their school bag.

“The full Bible is out of print in Andhra Pradesh. So I concentrated on the New Testament,” he added.
